14th TT Chess Composition Microweb C 31.5.2004
I was pleasantly surprised by a number of selfmates received for the
13th TT Chess Composition Microweb as I expected substantially lower
number. There were some excellent fairies and indeed I'm quite afraid by a prospective number
of entries that will come in for the 14th TT (in the sense that there might be too many).
I have a theme selected since the time I wrote
a comment to CIS No. 6. Yes, a campaign for fairy helpmates
enters an important phase: announcement of a theme tourney for fairy helpmates again.
Announcement
Chess Composition Microweb announces formal thematical tourney for fairy helpmates with
even number of phases, with the following theme: some motives or actions appearing in one phase
in orthogonal form, appear in the other in diagonal form.
Any fairy elements are allowed. Twins and more solutions are allowed.
Judge: Ion Murarasu (Romania)
Prizes: problem chess books.
Entries should be sent by email to juraj.lorinc@bigfoot.com
before May 31st 2004. The award will be published at Chess Composition Microweb.
Please, let your friends know about our competition!
Slovensky preklad temy: turnaj je vypisany pre pomocne maty exo s parnym poctom faz s nasledovnou temou:
niektore motivy alebo akcie, ktore sa nachadzaju v jednej faze v ortogonalnej podobe, sa v inej
nachadzaju v diagonalnej podobe. Dvojniky, viacere riesenia i lubovolne exoprvky su dovolene.
Examples and thoughts
Firstly, it should be said something about the theme. Shortly after entering the world of chess composition,
I was caught by helpplay problems showing the thematical elements in one phase in a orthogonal form and in the other in
a diagonal form. (As I learned later, it is quite usual approach and indeed, I myself published some problems
of this kind.) In these days also results of the Bertin memorial tourney were announced, showing some ambitious
ideas. French composers used to call that echo diagonal-orthogonal, I quite liked this expression and I started
to use it as well, even in my English texts. Perhaps it is quite unnaturally sounding, however I think it quite
well expresses the content.
So at CCM we have a lot of examples of echo diagonal-orthogonal, after all, it has its own thematical index entry
with more than 150 various problems pointed. I have selected a few of them as examples.
Moreover some special examples files will appear here soon.
