Award of 10th TT Chess Composition Microweb C 30.9.2002

Judged by Manfred Rittirsch (Germany). (Translation by judge too.)

In explicitly demanding the interchange of two pieces the tourney requirement already meant an economic concession in itself, because it sanctioned double modifications of the diagram position, which can be told from a damned Zeroposition merely by the fact that the scenes are corresponding. With the additional handicap of the central figures remaining stationary it was necessary to offer something very special to convince me. Unfortunately I could not maintain this from any of the 16 entries and therefore decided not to award any price. The struggle with the tourney challenge nevertheless produced some nice output, which I am going to handle in the following. Comments on the disregarded entries you can find here.

In connection with the capture characteristics of the locust family it is a really good idea in the context of this tournament to apply the well known colour change to 2 pawns barring thematic lines, hoping it might spread among all thematic pieces. Caissa did not think twice and used the opportunity to deepen the immanent reciprocity of the Zilahi cross-party. If one disregards the somewhat clumsy couple RLh3/Pd3, the elegance of construction is hard to beat.

Similar problems with play echoed from diagonal to orthogonal - even using anti-batteries - are legion (compare A, B), and I already had enough of the relatively harmless reciprocal change of moves with unpin, too, but it is just the extremely tournament-compatible exchange of places between lion and queen (whose function here is inevitably restricted to B or R, respectively) that could be new.

Anticipatory self-pins similar to the ones shown in the example are followed by active white anticipatory pin moves here. With their heterogeneity the author might have reached the maximum in terms of variety, because even on a symmetrical basis exceptional construction skills are required in order to draw two non-overlapping three-fold pin models from our twinning rule. As a bonus the grateful pattern offers delayed Umnov effects.

In a) last move cannot be f2-f4 : this would imply sBe5 promoted on e1 or c1 (via d2) and castling would be illegal. So the last move must be g3xf4, and it can be demonstrated that wPf4 is wPg2 and wPg5 is wPf2 (the missing sBc8 must be captured on white square by f3xg4, so the sequence f2xg3xf4 is illegal).

Given a) solution and the twin, in b) wPf4 is wPf2 and wPg5 is wPg2; as already seen, g3xf4 cannot be the last move if wPf4 is wPf2, so this leave only f2-f4 making castling illegal.

According to F.I.D.E. codex the e.p. capture may take place only if it can be proven that the pertinent pawn double step happened in the immediately preceding move. Initially this is not the case here, so in a) only that solution is executable, which "coincidentally" contains the white castling. With the execution of the castling it is certain however that Pg3xf4 must have been the last move, because an inversion of the double step would cut the obtrusive bBe5 from g1 and its genesis would not have been possible without destroying W’s right to castle by a pawn check from the second row. This is exactly where the funny twinning mechanism takes effect: Exposed to the interchange of two equivalent pawns a solver willing to take for granted a reasonable author’s intention can’t help subordinating the other square of origin (f2) to the Pf4 in b), assuming the double step as the only possible last move and playing the e.p. solution. Here the mere notation of the twin is equivalent to the exclamation mark frequently used with joke problems ("!") and proves a totally uncommon way to demonstrate the potential dependency of special moves. Sure this procedure is not completely respectable let alone accurate and therefore will not be given everyone’s consent. I try to take this into account with the "special" character of the distinction.

Half pin and double pin mates are helpmate standard just like the mobilization of wK (see no. 7). However, as long as no predecessor emerges, I can not refuse to praise the successful combination.

Nr. 12).

An economization regarding the use of fairy pieces seems worth an attempt, and the mechanism with the bR needing both moves to hurry to the line closure and the corresponding moves of its cross-checking white counterpart leaves a slightly schematic impression in its ponderousness. Nevertheless we are eventually dealing with an original variant of the well-known activation of wK (see also no. 12).

In a) the Pc7 at least prevents the cook 2...Rxb5#, whereas in b) it is completely superfluous, so that the twin could also read "b) e3 -> c7 (-bP)". However I am ready to compromise, since with the line opening in the 1st black move for the following annihilation taking place in both phases there is still something for the eye beyond the main motive of identical target fields.

The white play is dreary and the expenditure is high, but the mechanism with the overlapping lines of activity is not bad and obviously managed to escape the attention of the participants in the Whisky Tournament in Turku 1995.
