This is the 4th of 4 files containing Pat a Mat 23 originals. The others are

The solutions are already here. Note Slovak signs for pieces: K - king, D - queen, V - rook, S - bishop, J - knight, p - pawn, C - grasshopper, T - nightrider. Others are used 'ad hoc', I think they are understandable.

219 Pat a Mat 23 - December 1998

Comment on original for solving:
Fairy twomovers 219-222 have in some way common idea - changes of mates and their transfers and also changes of function of white moves.

Solution:
1.Sb5+? Kb6 a, Kc7 b, Ke7 c, Kf6 d 2.a8J# A, a8T# B, g8J# C, g8T# D, 1...Ke6 2.g8S#, 1...Kxf4!, 1.Sf5+! abcd 2.BADC, 1...Kc6, Kxd1, Kxb4 2.a8S#, Vd3#, Vb3#.

Double reciprocal change a la Bohuslav Sivak (Comm Brabec 60 C 26.5.1998, Lacny theme) it means with checking keys sending black king to more far flights, here with unexpected differentiation of knight and nightrider promotions.

Comment on original for solving:
Fairy twomovers 219-222 have in some way common idea - changes of mates and their transfers and also changes of function of white moves.

Solution:
1.Vf4? hr. 2.Exd7# A, Exf5# B, 1...Dd5 2.Exd5# C, 1...Dxe6!, 1.Sf4? hr. 2.B, C, 1...Vb5 2.A, 1...dxe6!, 1.Jdf4! hr. 2.C, A, 1...Vd3 2.B

Cyclical double threats where missing one acts as a variation mate. Abstract placement of white unit to f4 would lead to triple threat, but as concrete white keys always remove one mate, it seems this can be considered to be Sushkov theme.

221 Pat a Mat 23 - December 1998

Comment on original for solving:
Fairy twomovers 219-222 have in some way common idea - changes of mates and their transfers and also changes of function of white moves.

Solution:
a) 1.Vb1! A hr. 2.(1,5)e6# B, 1...Ce4 a, 2.Dh4# C, b) 1.B! hr. 2.C, 1...a 2.A, c) 1.C! hr. 2.A, 1...a 2.B

I got a) and b), but Mars Circe is too much for me. I tried, but it was impossible. Too much fairy. (Bohuslav Moravcik) Total Djurasevic theme with varied motivation is great achievement despite weaker economy.

222 Pat a Mat 23 - December 1998

Comment on original for solving:
Fairy twomovers 219-222 have in some way common idea - changes of mates and their transfers and also changes of function of white moves.

Solution:
1.LEg6? hr. 2.ABd6#, 1...Jf5, Se5, PAd5, Sb4 2.LEf1#, ABc6#, ABe6#, Jd3#, 1...VAxe4!, 1.LEe6? hr. 2.ABd6#, 1...Jf5, Se5, PAd5, Sb4 2.ABc6#, LEf1#, ABg6#, Se3#, 1...PAxe4!, 1.LEc6? hr. 2.ABd6#, 1...Jf5, Se5, PAd5, Sb4 2.ABe6#, ABg6#, LEf1#, Qxf3#, 1...PAxe4!, 1.LEb3! hr. 2.ABd6#, 1...Jf5, Se5, PAd5, Sb4 2.Jd3#, Se3#, Qxf3#, hxg3#

And here we see 30 pieces, white king is in check, but ... change Z-44-48. More precise study of theme reveals 4-phase carousel, where in 'non-carousel' variation has the same mate in 3 phases (!), thus giving triple reciprocal change too. Monumental work.

Andernach chess is well used in 223.

Solution:
a) 1.Dxf7(bD) dxe8V(čV) 2.Vxe6(bV) Ve3#, b) 1.Sxf7(bS) exf8J(čJ) 2.Jxe6(bJ) Jf4#

Standard (and nice) Andernach strategy.

224 Pat a Mat 23 - December 1998

Comment on original for solving:
224 joins two unusual fairy conditions with fairy rules for kings.

Solution:
a) 1.e1C+ Kd4 2.e2 Cd3# (3.Kd1?), 1...Kxa4 2.Sc1 Cd1# (3.Kxd1?), b) 1.e1D! Cd1+ 2.Dxh4(bD) De1# (3.Kxe1(bK)?), 1...Cf4 2.Dxd2(bD) Df2# (3.Kxf2(bK)?)

Interesting study of possibilities of two hard-core fairy genres, but there is missing more unity here.

Solution:
1.Dh7 Kb2 2.Kb8 Dg2 3.Db1 Db7#

Exact manoeuvre - little nut. Is there anybody able to double this or something similar?
