Selfmates 5

Here you can find a few selfmates that were published in recent time as originals in various magazines. One of them features chainese pieces, but none worse for that!
Camillo Gamnitzer
10570 Die Schwalbe December 1999

1st try:
1.c4? th. 2.Bc5+ bxc5 3.Sd5+ Kd3 4.Sb4+ Ke3 5.Sc2+ b,Bxc2#, 1...Bd3!

2nd try:
1.Bd6? th. 2.Qc3+ Sxc3#, 1...Qh8!

Additional try:
1.g7? th. 2.Bd6 etc., 1...Qh6!

Solution:
1.Rd8!! th. 2.Bd6 th. 3.Qc3+ Sxc3#, 2...Qh8 3.Rxh8 ~ 4.Qc3+ Sxc3#,
(1...Qh8 2.Rxh8 th. 3.Bd6, 2...Rh2 3.Rxh2 th. 4.Re2+ fxe2#, 3...f2 4.Rxf2 etc. or 3.Bc5+ bxc5 4.Rxh2 etc. - dual minor),
1...Qh6 2.c4! th. 3.Bc5+ bxc5 4.Sd5+ Kd3 5.Sb4+ Ke3 6.Sc2+ b,Bxc2#,
2...Bd3 3.Rxd3+! Kxd3 4.Qd4+! Kxd4 5.Sf5+ Kd3 6.Sxf2+ Sxf2#,

(1...Qh7 2.gxh7 ~ 3.Bd6 ~ 4.Qc3+ Sxc3#).

Play over whole board with spectacular rook and queen sacrifice in main variation and with nontrivial motivation for all movements. Genuine Gamnitzer!

Mike Prcic
PS9563 Problemist Supplement November 1999

1.Re7! zz
1...Ba8 2.Sc8 Bb7 3.Qb5+ axb5 4.Rc7+ Kxc7#
1...Bc8 2.Qg6+ Be6 3.Qe4+ Bd5 4.Rxa7! Bxe4#
(1...axb6 2.Qb5+ axb5 3.Rc7+ Kxc7#)

Royal battery mate expected, of course, but forced manoueuvre Bb7-c8-e6-d5-e4 was a bit unexpected for me. Clear position doesn't allow deeper strategy.

Petko Petkov
PS9567 Problemist Supplement November 1999

1.Qd7! th 2.Qd6+ Ke4 3.Qd3+ Ke5 4.Qe3+ PAxe3#
1...PAb1 2.Rb6+ Ke4 3.Rb4+ PAxb4 4.Qb7+ PAxb7#
1...PAc1 2.Rc6+ Ke4 3.Rc4+ PAxc4 4.Qc6+ PAxc6#
1...PAd1 2.Rd6+ Ke4 3.Rd4+ PAxd4 4.Qd5+ PAxd5#
1...PAg1 2.Sc6+ Ke4 3.Qe7+ Kd5 4.g8VA+ PAxg8#
1...Sg2 2.Qxf5+ Kd4 3.Re6+ Kc4 4.Re4+ PAxe4#
(1...PAf1 2.Qd6+ Ke4 3.Qxf4+ PAxf4#)

And now (as Monty Pythons use to say) something completely different: genuine Petkov. Rich play of batteries and 6 full-length variations in fourmove selfmate with a few fairy pieces. Very well done!

Valerij Kirillov
Andrej Selivanov

S1795 The Problemist November 1999

1.Qa6! zugzwang
1...Sc7 2.Qc6+ Sd5 3.c4 Kd4 4.Qc5+ Ke4 5.Sc3+ Sxc3#
1...Sd6 2.Bxd6 Kd5 3.Qa2+ Ke4 4.Rf4+ exf4 5.g4 f3#
1...Sf6 2.Bxf6 Kf5 3.Qc8+ Ke4 4.Rd4+ exd4 5.c4 d3#
1...Sg7 2.Qg6+ Sf5 3.g4 Kf4 4.Qg5+ Ke4 5.Sg3+ Sxg3#

Precise key and then two pairs of symmetrical variations.

Irwin Stein
S1796 The Problemist November 1999

1.Qd1+! Ka2 2.Qb3+ Ka1 3.Re1+ Rxe1 4.Kc2+ exd4 5.Rd1+ Rxd1 6.Qa4+ Bxa4#

All white pieces except king are sacrificed during six moves. Final position is hard to find, but that's all...
