1st Prize The Problemist 1992

1.Qxe6+? Kd8! 2.Rc8#

1...fxe1S 2.Rc8+ K~ 3.Bc4 Sd3#
1...fxe1B 2.Bxb5+ K~ 3.Rc4 Bc3#
1...fxe1R 2.Qxe6+ K~ 3.Qxb3 Qxb3#
1...Rxf1 2.Qxf3 ~ 3.Qxb3 Qxb3#
1...Be2 2.Rxe2 ~ 3.Rb2 Ra1#

GY: "I found the two rocket-type variations, with wR and wB rushing away one after the other, most original, and presented in a clear setting."

JL: "I like this kind of construction, very light, where some black brutal defences like 2...Ra1+ in silent variations aren't blocked, rather there are logical mating continuations. Grimshaw after critical moves is a bit unexpected and the evacuation of 1st rank by white is well done."

+++ Composition In the Spotlight (CIS) No. 15 +++

Spotlight comment by Juraj Lörinc:

One of the aims of CIS is to point to problems shown at CCM long time ago, yet interesting, to bring them to the light once again. Today I was randomly browsing old CCM pages and this reflex mate has immediately caught my attention. So many tries and so many different mates after varied refutations! Hm. What is the record number? Here you can see nine... and what about fairy reflex mates? Hm, something to think about in coming days!
